    I remember in 1964 when I was eight or nine and first saw the Bantam paperback cover of The Man Of Bronze and reading it and asking my mom who Barney Oldfield was?

    It’s interesting that Baumhofer paid attention to the editor’s description of of Doc as looking like Clark Gable but Dent’s description was nothing like the cover art for the pulp magazine. (The wikipedia entry on Doc erroneously states that Doc’s look was supposed
    to be based on Gary Cooper.)
